Our Car Seat Heroes

We often get asked advice on car seats for the boys and we know it can be a bit of a minefield when it comes to car seats and travel systems. It’s something you use everyday so is most definitely worth putting a bit of research and money into.

We had previously been gifted the Gravity car seat by Jané (so good we bought a second!) Sam still uses his forward facing and is now 2. It’s suitable from birth but with Rory I had him in his travel system car seat until he was about 6 months (until he became too heavy to lift in the car seat as well). It was then time to look at the next stage car seats for Zac so I could transfer Rory to the Gravity.

He is still rearward facing but he is much more settled in the car now as the Gravity is raised and it allows him to actually see out of the windows (car journeys were starting to get pretty painful and the car seat toys just weren’t cutting it anymore!).

We have a full review and video on the Gravity HERE when we collaborated previously with Jané.

Here is the video showing the 360 degree rotation (demonstration carried out on a private lane as Zac wasn’t actually forward facing at the time but was just to show for the video). How small do the boys look here 🥰

Samuel Johnston one of Janés largest stockists in the UK kindly invited us up to view their range of next stage car seats for Zac. For anyone local they have a showroom in Mallusk, just outside Belfast with parking at the door which is particularly handy when it comes to testing seats in your car or trying a pram/buggy for size!

They have a huge range and an array of brands of car seats, travel systems, toys, baby furniture, gifts and more! There were lots of second stage car seats but I was instantly drawn to the Jané brand as had been so impressed with the Gravity Car Seat. They also have their own test centres and go over and above to test their products to ensure they meet all EU standards.

The Montecarlo was not a car seat I had heard of before but I had seen this type of design in other brands. It’s defiantly a car seat that can grow with your little one. Its suitable for Groups 1-3 car seats. For Zac’s age the safety bar (impact shield) is used along with a seat belt and then as he gets older/taller/weighs more the bar is removed and it becomes a glorified booster seat. It’s much more than that though …….. the base is isofix which I LOVE! It just has that extra security and peace of mind for me. It has an aluminium structure so is much safer but still allows you to adjust the headrest and recline it. We were kindly gifted this car seat to review and have been using it for about 2/3 months now.

It was a little tricky to get the hang of initially as I was used to just a buckle before but the safety bar and seat belt once mastered is so handy and it’s not something Zac can get out of, yet he happily gets into his car seat. I think it’s the freedom he has for his arms that he likes and he feels less restrained than in the Gravity. (He has also had the odd danger nap using it as a head rest 🤣).

Here is all the info on the Montecarlo below:

  • Group 1-2-3
  • For children from 9kg (20lbs) – 36kg (79lbs).
  • 9 months to 12 years approx.
  • ISOFIX and/or 3 point seat belt fitting.
  • Smartphone QR barcode for in car fitting videos, just scan the barcode is see the video installation guide on your smartphone, in your car!
  • Complies with ECE R44.04

The Montecarlo R1 + Xtend impact shield is specially designed to adapt to each stage of your child’s growth. Suitable for children between 9 – 36 kg, this Group 1-2–3 car seat has an integral adjustment system that allows both the seat’s height and width to be altered for a perfect fit, effectively protecting your child during all stages of growth and accommodating for different thickness of clothing depending on the days weather.

Below is a little video of our visit to the showroom when we tested it out!

Sam is still using his Gravity but Tara was so impressed she got the Montecarlo too. Sam is a bit small for it still but she wanted to have it for when the new baby comes in September as the Gravity has an insert and tilt that allows it to be a 0+ car seat. Sam has also recently worked out how to unbuckle his car seat so he will be transitioning to the Montecarlo sooner than he thinks!! 😂 Wee monkey!

As previously disclosed this was a gifted collaboration with Samuel Johnston but we have bought from the Jané brand before (Tara bought her travel system and babyside crib here prior to us even having a blog) so we do highly recommend it. Definitely check out their website or sign up for their deals email! They run some fab flash sales.
